Chinese activist who fled house arrest lands in U.S.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A blind Chinese legal activist who was suddenly allowed to leave the country arrived in the United State on Saturday, ending a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle that had tested U.S.-China relations.

Chen Guangcheng had been hurriedly taken from a hospital hours earlier and put on a plane for the U.S. after Chinese authorities suddenly told him to pack and prepare to leave. He arrived Saturday evening at Newark Liberty International Airport and was whisked to New York City, where he will be staying.

Dressed in a white shirt and khaki pants and using crutches, his right leg in a cast, Chen was greeted with cheers when he arrived at the apartment in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village where he will live with his family. The complex houses faculty and graduate students of New York University, where Chen is expected to attend law school.

“For the past seven years, I have never had a day’s rest,” he said through a translator, “so I have come here for a bit of recuperation for body and in spirit.”

Chen urged the crowd to fight against injustice, and thanked the U.S. and Chinese governments, along with the embassies of Switzerland, Canada and France.

“After much turbulence, I have come out of Shandong,” he said, referring to the Chinese province where he was under house arrest. The U.S. has granted him partial citizenship rights, he said.

Chen gave a short statement, which was greeted by cheers in Mandarin and English, but did not take questions from reporters.

The departure of Chen, his wife and two children to the United States marked the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the self-taught activist.

After seven years of prison and house arrest, Chen made a daring escape from his rural village in April and was given sanctuary inside the U.S. Embassy, triggering a diplomatic standoff over his fate. With Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Beijing for annual high-level discussions, officials struck a deal that let Chen walk free, only to see him have second thoughts. That forced new negotiations that led to an agreement to send him to the U.S. to study law, a goal of his, at New York University.

“Thousands of thoughts are surging to my mind,” Chen said before he left China. His concerns, he said, included whether authorities would retaliate for his negotiated departure by punishing his relatives left behind. It also was unclear whether the government will allow him to return.

In New York, he said China had promised him protection of his rights as a citizen there.

“I am very gratified to see that the Chinese government has been dealing with the situation with restraint and calm, and I hope to see that they continue to open discourse and earn the respect and trust of the people.”

Chen’s expected attendance at New York University comes from his association with Jerome Cohen, a law professor there who advised Chen while he was in the U.S. Embassy. The two met when Chen came to the United States on a State Department program in 2003, and Cohen has been staunch advocate for him since.

“I’m very happy at the news that he’s on his way and I look forward to welcoming him and his family tonight and to working with him on his course of study,” Cohen said.

Before he left China, Chen asked his supporters and others in the activist community for their understanding of his desire to leave the front lines of the rights struggle in China.

“I am requesting a leave of absence, and I hope that they will understand,” he said.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland praised the quiet negotiations that freed him.

“We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen’s desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals,” Nuland said in a statement.

The White House also said it was pleased with the outcome of negotiations.

China’s Foreign Ministry said it had no comment. The government’s news agency, Xinhua, issued a brief report saying that Chen “has applied for study in the United States via normal channels in line with the law.”

Chen’s supporters welcomed his departure. “This is great progress,” said U.S.-based rights activist Bob Fu. “It’s a victory for freedom fighters.”

The 40-year-old Chen is emblematic of a new breed of activists that the Communist Party finds threatening. Often from rural and working-class families, these “rights defenders,” as they are called, are unlike the students and intellectuals from the elite academies and major cities of previous democracy movements and thus could potentially appeal to ordinary Chinese.

Chen gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and for farmers’ rights and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. That angered local officials, who seemed to wage a personal vendetta against him, convicting him in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges and then holding him for the past 20 months in illegal house arrest.

Even with the backstage negotiations, Chen’s departure came hastily. Chen spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in a hospital for the foot he broke escaping house arrest. Only on Wednesday did Chinese authorities help him complete the paperwork needed for his passport.

Chen said by telephone Saturday that he was informed at the hospital just before noon to pack his bags to leave. Officials did not give him and his family passports or inform them of their flight details until after they got to the airport.

Seeming ambivalent, Chen said that he was “not happy” about leaving and that he had a lot on his mind, including worries about retaliation against his extended family back home. His nephew, Chen Kegui, is accused of attempted murder after he allegedly used a kitchen knife to attack officials who stormed his house after discovering Chen Guangcheng was missing.

“I hope that the government will fulfill the promises it made to me, all of its promises,” Chen said. Such promises included launching an investigation into abuses against him and his family in Shandong province, he said before the phone call was cut off.

Much as Chen has said he wants return to China, it remains uncertain whether the Chinese government would bar him, as they have done with many exiled activists.

“Chen’s departure for the U.S. does not and should not in any way mark a ‘mission accomplished’ moment for the U.S. government,” said Phelim Kine, a senior Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The harder, longer-term part is ensuring his right under international law to return to China when he sees fit.”

Md. town extends hand to G-8 demonstrators

THURMONT, Md. (AP) ? Ethiopian expatriates, unmanned drone replicas and an anti-nuclear Buddhist monk are heading to the Maryland mountain town of Thurmont in hopes of influencing world leaders at a global economic summit at nearby Camp David on Friday and Saturday.

They’ll join dozens, and perhaps hundreds, of demonstrators from East Coast occupy movements who plan to fill the sidewalks and the airwaves with messages protesting the bailout of U.S. banks and other large corporations.

Police aim to keep the demonstrators at least four miles from the presidential retreat in Catoctin Mountain Park where top officials from the Group of Eight leading industrial nations are meeting.

Merchants in the town of 6,200 have spruced up their stores and stocked their shelves in anticipation of visitors doing some shopping and dining between marching and chanting.

“As long as we treat them with a welcoming and respectful attitude, they’ll treat us the same way ? at least that’s what my hope is,” said Virginia LaRoche, owner of Timeless Trends Boutique on Main Street.

Some past G-8 meetings have been accompanied by large and sometimes violent protests.

This year’s G-8 Summit had been set for Chicago, just before a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit. The Obama administration moved the economic meeting to Camp David, but denied speculation that the sessions were moved for security reasons.

International events at the presidential retreat are part of Thurmont’s history, and town officials are encouraging residents to embrace rather than fear the summit. Flags of the participating nations ? Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Britain and United States ? are displayed in a downtown park planted with red, white and blue flowers.

Beneath the flags, a community bulletin board displays news clippings from the Middle East peace talks at Camp David in 1978 and 2000.

At the Cozy, an 80-year-old country inn favored by the press corps, a Camp David museum showcases the town’s connection to historic events.

Pat Ridenour, co-owner of the Thurmont Kountry Kitchen, aims to sell lots of French onion and Maryland crab soup, and homemade fudge.

“I hope we do get as busy as everyone thinks we’re going to get,” she said.

The welcoming attitude contrasts with security measures the Secret Service and local police have been planning for months. Catoctin Mountain Park, a National Park Service property, is closed during the summit, as is neighboring Cunningham Falls State Park. Much of Route 77, which winds between the parks, is closed to all but local traffic.

The travel restrictions have put a crimp in Saturday’s annual mother-daughter dinner at Pioneer Baptist Church in Thurmont.

“We did have a few that were concerned and said they weren’t going to make an attempt,” said Pastor James Coblentz.

But Thurmont resident Amy Blickenstaff, who uses Route 77 to visit her mother in unincorporated Foxville, said the road closure is a minor inconvenience in light of the important events at Camp David.

“The world leaders can come together,” she said. “We’re the ones that have the ability to make the world a better place.”

A better world is also the goal of Toyoshige Sekiguchi, a Japanese Buddhist monk who walked from Pittsburgh to Thurmont, chanting and beating a prayer drum, to publicize his plea to the G-8 to abolish nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants.

Ethiopian national Kebadu Belachew of Washington said he hopes to bring several busloads of people from the city’s Ethiopian community to Thurmont on Saturday to protest the policies of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. The Ethiopian prime minister is invited to the summit for food security talks.

And the Know Drones Tour plans to bring 11-foot replicas of the unmanned aircraft to Thurmont to protest America’s use of drones against terrorism suspects. Critics say drones are also being used for surveillance of the American public. They say drones turn the entire planet into a battlefield.

Members of Occupy Baltimore, lead organizer for the demonstrations, say they don’t expect to get anywhere near Camp David and plan to focus instead on the news media in town.

“There’ll be lots of international press there to talk to and I think the word will get out,” said Dick Ochs, a retired Baltimore printer.

Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins said he’s not expecting any trouble from the demonstrators, who also have events planned in Frederick, 15 miles south of Thurmont.

“I think their intentions are strictly to demonstrate and wave signs and chant and maybe stand along the road and make their statements and move on,” he said.

An image of the birth certificate of country music legend Loretta Lynn, who was born Loretta Webb, is seen in an image provided by the Kentucky state Office of Vital Statistics. Newly discovered documents indicate country music legend Loretta Lynn is three years older than she has led people to believe, a change that casts shadows on the story told in “Coal Miner?s Daughter.? The birth certificate on file at the state Office of Vital Statistics in Frankfort, Ky., shows that Loretta Webb was born on April 14, 1932, in Johnson County, Kentucky. That makes her 80 years old, not 77, as numerous books and other references claim her to be, based on her widely-accepted birth year of 1935. The record was filed in 1965. An undated image provided by the Johnson County, Ky., clerk?s office shows Loretta Lynn’s marriage certificate for her marriage to Oliver Vanetta Lynn, Jr. Newly discovered documents indicate country music legend Lynn is three years older than she has led people to believe, a change that casts shadows on the story told in “Coal Miner?s Daughter.? In Lynn’s 1976 bestselling autobiography, she says she was married at 13, moved with her husband to Washington State at 16 and was a mother of four by 18. Lynn was instead married at 15, which was not unusual at that place and time. (AP Photo/Johnson County, Ky., clerk?s office)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Country music legend Loretta Lynn is three years older than she has led people to believe, an age change that undermines the story she told of being married at 13 in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” documents obtained by The Associated Press show.

Lynn’s birth certificate on file at the state Office of Vital Statistics in Frankfort, Ky., shows that Loretta Webb was born on April 14, 1932, in Johnson County, Kentucky. That makes her 80 years old, not 77. Also on file is her marriage license and two affidavits from her mother, Clara Marie Ramey, and S.W. Ward Jr., who was not related to the family, listing the same birthdate.

The records weren’t filed until 1965, which meant that Lynn needed multiple documents to prove her age at that time. Lynn’s signature appears on the document as Loretta Webb Lynn.

Melvin Webb lists his daughter “Loretta” as 7 years old for the 1940 Census, according to a digital copy on file at the Kentucky Historical Society. Lynn’s marriage license, obtained by the AP from the Johnson County clerk’s office lists her as 15 on Jan. 10, 1948.

In “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the autobiography that became an Academy Award-winning film, Lynn told a different story ? that she was married at 13 and was a mother of four by 18. Most books and public references to Lynn list her current age as 77.

When contacted by the AP, Lynn’s spokeswoman, Nancy Russell of Nashville, Tenn., declined comment. She said that Lynn has told her before in no uncertain terms, “If anyone asks how old I am, tell them it’s none of their business!”

Lynn’s younger brother, Herman Webb, declined to disclose Lynn’s age, although he said there might have been a “mix-up” with Lynn’s paperwork after she moved to Nashville to launch her country career. Her parents and many other relatives are dead, including her husband, O.V. “Mooney” Lynn.

Certainly Lynn isn’t the first celebrity of a certain age to be less than forthcoming about a birthday, but the discrepancy is significant because age isn’t just a number for the Country Music Hall of Fame member. It is woven into her compelling life story, made famous in her 1976 bestselling autobiography, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” and the subsequent film starring Sissy Spacek. The movie made $67 million nationwide and was nominated for seven Oscars; Spacek won for her portrayal of Lynn.

The Grammy-winning singer recently announced that it will become a Broadway musical, starring actress and singer Zooey Deschanel.

The way Lynn chose to tell it in the book, she was married at 13, moved with her husband to Washington State at 16 and was a mother of four by 18. Lynn has six kids in all. The marriage certificate shows that Lynn instead married just shy of her 16th birthday, which was not unusual in Kentucky at that time. Her husband was 21.

It would have been illegal for a girl under the age of 14 to marry in Kentucky in 1948, said R. Eric Henninger of the Kentucky State Law Library. At that time, he said, “lots of folks didn’t have any sort of official proof of age.”

An AP reporter recently found Lynn’s birth certificate online that listed a different birthdate from the one listed in the news agency’s database of celebrity birthdays. The reporter changed the date in the database; when the new birthday was used in a recent story, the Country Music Hall of Fame contacted the AP about the discrepancy.

Lynn addresses the perils of disclosing her age in her autobiography.

“When I was born, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the president for several years. That’s the closest I’m gonna come to telling my age in this book, so don’t go looking for it,” she writes. “I’m trying to make a living singing songs. I don’t need nobody out there saying, ‘She don’t look bad considering she’s such-and-such years old.’”

Lynn’s co-author on “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” New York Times sports columnist George Vecsey, said in a phone interview that he did not verify the age claims in the book with official documentation.

“It’s her book, and I never saw a birth certificate, marriage license. It’s what they told me,” he said. “I couldn’t say that she was the one who told me first. Between her manager (David Skepner) who has passed and her husband who has now passed, it was at least three different people telling me that.”

Vecsey said he did not want to speculate on what the age difference means to Lynn’s narrative.

Lynn’s daughter, Patsy Lynn Russell, did not respond to emailed requests for comment.

Webb, her brother who lives in their hometown of Van Lear, Ky., believes “there might have been a mix–up somewhere along the line” when Lynn first arrived in Nashville and signed with the Wilburn Brothers.

“When she was with Teddy and Doyle (Wilburn), she just don’t tell her age after that,” he said. “I think they got some of her paperwork messed up.”

Webb declined to comment on Lynn’s age. When asked his own birthday, like a good brother, he replied: “I was born a year and a half after she was.”

Research supervisor Walter Bowman at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives said in the early ’30s it was more common for people to register their prized horses or livestock than the births of their children.

Not until the Social Security system was founded in the mid-1930s did parents have a monetary reason to put their kids on record.

Social Security Administration officials said privacy laws prevent them from releasing information about any living person, including a birth date.

Music journalist and author Robert K. Oermann, who wrote “Finding Her Voice” about women in country music, said nothing can overshadow Lynn’s accomplishments.

“In the 1960s, you didn’t have the 24-hour news cycle, saturation of personality journalism that you have today. So what appealed to people was the fact that the songs were so extraordinary. Her singing was so great. Everything about her was so refreshing and country,” he said.

“It wasn’t until much later that people became aware of her backstory, but the music itself is what made her a star. The biography, the life story was just the icing on the cake.”

In 1972, Lynn became the first woman to be named entertainer of the year by the Country Music Association. She is known for hits, including “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” ”You Ain’t Woman Enough,” ”The Pill,” ”Rated X,” and “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind).” Her last top 10 record as a soloist was “I Lie” in 1982.

Iranians rally to denounce Bahrain-Saudi ties

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iranians rallied Friday to denounce efforts by Bahrain‘s Sunni rulers to forge closer ties with Saudi Arabia, a pact the Shiite powerhouse Iran claims would go against the will of the tiny island nation’s majority Shiites.

Iran’s anger is directed at archrival Saudi Arabia, which has been acting as a protector of Bahrain’s ruling Sunni dynasty. It was set off by efforts earlier this week by Gulf Arab states to outline closer political and security ties among their nations.

Though a decision on a Gulf Arab pact was postponed at a meeting in Riyadh on Monday, the gathering itself upset Tehran, which summoned Bahrain’s top diplomat in the country late Thursday to relay its concerns, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Bahrain has been rocked by an uprising in which the Shiite-led opposition seeks to overturn the wide-ranging powers of the ruling Sunni dynasty. At least 50 people have died in the unrest since February 2011.

Bahrain’s rulers and their patron Saudi Arabia accuse Iran of encouraging the protests, claims that Tehran has denied. Iran and Bahrain have occasionally summoned each other’s envoys since the beginning of Bahrain’s unrest.

Last year, Saudi forces led 1,500 Gulf troops into Bahrain to help prop up the Sunni dynasty against the uprising, now in its 15th month. The result has been a virtual melding of the two countries on the ground ? with the Saudi and Bahraini flags often displayed in unison at the airport and some security checkpoints.

Opposition groups in Bahrain, however, have strongly denounced the calls for tighter bonds with Saudi Arabia and possibly other Gulf states.

Friday’s government-backed march followed midday prayers in Tehran, led by cleric Kazem Sedighi who said a Saudi-Bahraini pact would be an “ominous conspiracy” aimed at the “annexation” of Bahrain by Saudi Arabia.

“Bahrain and regional nations, as well as the Muslim world and the Iranian nation will never accept the conspiracy,” Sedighi said.

State television said similar rallies took place in other cities and towns in Iran, with thousands participating.

Many nationalist and hard-line conservatives in Iran consider Bahrain, which gained independence from Britain in 1971, as a rightful part of the Persian country as it was before it fell under Britain during colonial times.

Until 1971 and under the Western-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi who was toppled by the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran kept two empty seats in its parliament for supposed representatives from “Bahrain province.”

On Sunday, about 190 lawmakers ? more than half the Iranian parliament ? issued a statement condemning the Gulf Arab union plans.

Do Married Folks Make Great Matchmakers? | Black and Married …

Before I married, I found myself curious about relationships and was eager to aid others in making love work. I constantly kept my eyes and ears open as singles were speaking to determine who would be a good fit for whom. If you were to ask any of my friends they would guarantee I fixed them up on at least a date or two. It was difficult for me to see two people I felt would be a really good match, not connect. I thought I had all the skills necessary to become a world class matchmaker. However, my track record proved to be not that great. One couple married and one couple I?d rather not even discuss. Yeah, it was that bad. The problem was I didn?t stop at the matchmaking. I felt I had to still be involved after the initial connection. Wrong!

Because I am married now I am quite familiar with the energy a relationship requires and the truth is people can?t be rushed into love. In the beginning,?I found myself offering unsolicited advice and pushing people toward places they weren?t ready to go at that time. I was ready to counsel them like they had already committed when they were still in the ?getting to know you? phase. Not saying that everyone I introduced had to get married, but I at least wanted them to build a connection that meant something. Wrong again.

As I think about my current desire to see others happy in love, I think about the other married couples I know and there does appear to be a pattern. We tend to get excited about the idea of helping others acquire the same type of love we?ve obtained. We get all giddy and almost childlike whenever a matchmaking opportunity exists. I guess part of it is that we are happy; I recognize not all married couples are, but for the most part we are creating and maintaining good marriages. We just want others to have that experience. I know the singles would rather we butt out, but when we can share our secrets we do. Although we may still have work to do in our relationships, we definitely feel like we are experts on the matters of love. This is where problems can arise.

What married people have to remember is that we aren?t experts on dating. I can advise on how to be a supportive and loving spouse or how to compromise and stay committed. But I cannot always relate to some of the current challenges singles face when it comes to looking for Mr. or Ms. Right, having been married for almost 14 years. I understand how to build up one relationship, my marriage. Occasionally I might get lucky and create a true match made in heaven. But overall, those of us in the matchmaking business have to be careful. The greatest information we can offer singles is the real deal on the tools needed to build a healthy relationship. Now, if we come across a great single guy for a great single friend, go ahead and introduce, but allow them to find their own way to love.

BMWK, do you feel married people make great matchmakers?
